Ubuntu 11.10 Cannot change background

I updated to the 11.10 release a few days ago and have been unable to change my background wallpaper at all. It's stuck on the default 11.10 wallpaper. If I right-click, then click "change desktop background," I do get the "Appearance Settings" window. However, when I try to click one of the images, nothing happens. The small preview image changes, but nothing happens to my actual wallpaper.

Also, when I try to manually change the wallpaper from a different image that's not in the pre-loaded ones, it doesn't work either.

I installed Gnome 3 but had the background issue before the install, and I have tried both the gconf-cleaner, which didn't work, and creating a new user (I was able to change the background there but not on the main one that I actually use). I also have been able to change the login screen background through the new user, but not being able to change the wallpaper on the actual main user kind of defeats the purpose of having done that.

Please let me know if there's anything I could do but haven't done! While the default 11.10 wallpaper is nice to look at, I hate feeling like I'm just using Windows 7 starter and don't have the permission to change my background.

I'm thinking all did not go well with your upgrade. I upgraded and wallpaper changes fine. As soon as you select one, it immediately changes the desktop wallpaper to your choice.
