ubuntu 11.04 network manager question

hi
my wife has a usb modem through sprint, for her laptop. when she is home she gets poor reception in our house
so i bought an external antenna and i took an old computer dell 2400 and a linksys g router and started playing
first i used 10.04 but it was a pain setting up, so after doing some reading i found out that 11.04 had a
script through network manager and auto connect for usb modems so i installed 11.04.
11.04 runs fine on the dell 2400 with ubuntu classic no unity, it auto connects my wifes usb modem (i added a pci 2.0
intel usb card) connected the on board eth1 port (set port to be shared) to the winlan port of my router,
works great.

my question is i would like to set up a second eth card to wol, ssh, vcn into my 2400 from another network
or patch it back into the router i already have, i tried it and network manager kinda goes haywire lol, i guess what
i need to know can i lock each card's configuration down? once i connect the second card back into the router on
port 1-4 it stops using the usb modem and tries to use the second network card as the INTERNET connection.

i do have two networks, and i have tried to hook the second network into the eth pci card but network manager tries
to use my network insted of the usb modem, i even went into my second network and disabled the INTERNET for that
network cards mac address no go it still didn't wont to use the usb modem.

my first thought was just a server with no desktop but i didn't know if i could get network manager to auto mount the usb modem and
connect to the INTERNET.

any ideas or will this plain just not work ?

It'll work but.....

The problem you're seeing is that NM (and other GUI managers) are really only designed to get your computer connected to THE network, and not 'the networks.' What you're going to want to look into is stopping NM from accessing the card you've installed, and only let it manage the USB modem.

Then you'll want to manually configure the card from the command line. http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uifconfi.htm has information on how to do this. Once you've got it set and working the way you need it to, you can script the configuration so the card comes up at boot time.

hi slingshotsuicide

thank you for the reading material, the first thing i found in my reading material you sent(link) me was how to stop nm from trying to manage my pci card this is done in:

/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

i added these lines to the bottom:
[keyfile]
unmanaged-devices=mac:00:90:27:e5:28:dc

this disabled my pci network card in network manager, then in a terminal i started trying to set my IP, netmask and broadcast address.

ifconfig without a pci card will show eth0 as being integrated net workcard on the mother board.

if you add a pci card in the mix ifconfig will show pci card eth0 and eth1 integrated net work card on the mother board.

when you set the pci card to unmanaged then ifconfig will only give you eth1

after doing this in a terminal:
ifconfig eth2 192.168.1.201 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255

then do ifconfig you will have eth1 and eth2 lol with eth2 set correctly

ok i need to run this some where in start up where would be the best place and at what time during start up should it be ran, remember my goal is to ssh into a terminal and start xvnc server and login to ubuntu at the login screen.

ifconfig eth2 192.168.1.201 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255

/etc/init.d/networking <<< i added it here at the bottom but didn't work any ideas?

up date
i created a script in /etc/init.d/eth2 called eth2 and loaded my setting for eth2 it worked great, hum there is a problem with x11vnc so i set the dell 2400 to auto login. so at this point wol will start the computer and it will automatically login and to stop the computer i will ssh in and sudo halt.

ok now the hard part, explaining this to the wife .
