Ubantu to OSX conneciton

Hi

Just installed ubuntu Breezy on my IBM T22. Now I want to connect it to my Apple G4 running OSX Tiger. i have installed netatalk to enable apple's AFP over TCP (I've set it to turn of apple talk raw)

I have managed T22 home DIR on the G4 via AFP. So I know netatalk and AFP are working. Bit I can only mount my G4 home DIR as a windows files share on the T22. I'm really confused as to why I have to use two different methods for each direction.

I'm finding ubuntu a bit frustrating because so mush is hidden (may be I'm not looking in the right place)

What I'd like to do is use AFP in both direction. I've followed the netatalk manual but I can't work out under ubuntu how I make a the mount/afp call to the G4 when I try and enter this as a location

afp://ipaddress/share

It just comes back saying it's invalid

any suggestions or pointers to good doc site?

Welcome to LQ!

I don't know about AFP, but what are you trying to acomplish? Are you setting up a network share directory on the OS X box?

If so, nfs is supported natively by both OS X and Linux, so perhaps may be a good option. Look at nfs-utils for OS X, and the Linux NFS howto.

I hope this helps

i have the same issue

Bently27, i feel your pain.

i, too, am trying to sort out networking on my mixed os x/linux/freebsd network...

As far as i can tell, there is NO software availible to mount afp shares TO YOUR LINUX BOX. ie - share on g4 mounted to filesystem tree on ur ubuntu box...

that being said, i wish i was wrong. NFS is supposed to be native, but if you've ever tried to set osx up to SERVE nfs... it's a nightmare... not to mention that NFS isn't secure, so if i want to store... ahem.... private files on my server away from prying eyes (spouse/kids) there's no way to do so..., smb/samba works great, but osx displays 3 different workgroups in the network browsing window with different permutations of the workgroup name... ie HOME/Home/home.... offends my asthetic sense

No, i wish there was a way to mount afp shares to my linux filesystem... calling all developers..... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bently27,

Use samba... i've got it up and running and when i finally got the settings tweaked... it's awesome... i can mount my shares on my slackware boxes to my mac and i can mount my shares on my osx box from my linux boxes.... it's a dream...

and hey, just b/c Micro$oft invented the smb/cifs technology, doesnt mean that the opensource crowd didnt perfect it ;) the most important point in setting up smb sharing in osx is you have to tweak /etc/smb.conf a little bit. Basically, you tell the mac to NEVER force an election or become a master browser... macs tend to get a big head when they get a little power and try to take over the network... but you are the admin... dont let them!!!!!

feel free to drop me a line or a post back with any ???'s

Matt
