Turtle Beach Riviera audio card sounds like Max Headroom

First, I know a Max Headroom reference dates me. Here's the story.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 6400+
Ubuntu 9.10

Just for grins, I decided to put a turtle beach riviera audio card in my system. If the audio did not work at all, this would be much easier I imagine. But the card works fine- until there is a significant change in the video display. By that, I mean a window is minimized or maximized, a java element changes images, or a new application is opened. When the display changes, I get static in the audio. Sometimes the audio stutters, sounding like Max Headroom.

I know this isn't much to go on. But frankly, I don't even know where to begin. Any suggestions are appreciated.
