trying to install java 1.5
I downloaded the java5....deb packages but I cant seem to get them installed, also tried using automatix but with no luck.
I have an appp which requires java 1.5.
$ which java
/usr/bin/java
$ java -version
java version "1.4.2-02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build Blackdown-1.4.2-02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build Blackdown-1.4.2-02, mixed mode)
what am I missing? should I download the .bin files from java and install that way?
Thanks

If you have the universe and multiverse repositories enabled do :
Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre

Do as mrcheeks says, use the prepackaged builds since they're easier to install.
Also, don't forget to run sudo update-alternatives --config java to choose the default JVM you want.

I'm going to try it now. I'll let you know what happens
success:
java -version
java version "1.5.0_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_06-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_06-b05, mixed mode, sharing)
I don't recall seeing the sudo update...java information before
still learning debian system
Thanks all

I think that the installer scripts should automatically ask you for the default option if there's more than one. Thinking about that update-alternatives command out of the blue is not really user friendly lol.
