Trouble with stability using nVidia drivers - Kubuntu

Hi,

I have recently switched to Linux, choosing Kubuntu.

One thing I just can't seem to get round is a serious problem with the nVidia driver I installed with Automatix. I get the nVidia splash when Xserver strts up, but now my computer has stability comparable to that of Win9x. I really want to use Xgl/compiz, but I can't without these drivers working properly.

Could anyone please shed some light on how to fix this?

Stability is sort of ambiguous. Do you mean that your monitor falls over because it's unstable? You should be a little more descriptive about your problem. Here is how my kids installed nVidia drivers on their Kubuntu boxes after they added some extra repositories
Code:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-common
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable

They haven't complained and I haven't noticed any problems.

FYI, compiz/XGL are not finished products (AFAIK), so you could have "stability" problems with them that are worse than Windows.

Kubuntu and XGL Compiz

I too used to have the stability problem with the video but after placing a brick on top of the monitor it seems a lot more stable.

LOL ok seriously

Try installing the drivers mentioned in the previous post. I just followed the directions hereand was able to get it working easily. I guess it is just a matter of getting the correct/updated drivers to help you with your problem.

Good Luck

I had some sever graphic stability probs when I first installed Kubuntu and the Nvidia drivers, even bought a new card to see if this would help, it did, turned out a capacitor on my old card was about to blow!

Now my computer runs fine apart from one very odd problem, each time I reboot I have to re-install the Nvidia drivers! I get no error messages (used to but just installed xorg-dev as they recommended) but the kernel module seems to get deleted each time my computer shuts down! Once installed everything works fine for me 3d acceleration is great compared to my old card (5200 to 6600GT) both monitors work great but alas and alack impossible to boot with the drivers installed! What am I missing?!!! PS, I didn't have this issue under Mandriva 2006 but decided to move to Kubuntu as I didn't like the direction Mandriva seem to be taking.

Dinnyhoon, Automatix installs some pretty old drivers for nvidia.... Install them yourself, the kernel headers are installed by default, you just need to:

sudo apt-get install xorg-dev
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run

after downloading the official drivers from NVIDIA themselves

I let nvidia update my xorg.conf also which has thus far worked fine for me (had not installed some newer modules in my old xorg.conf written 3 yrs ago!)

I gave up on installing them from the Ubuntu repositories, it was giving me far too much trouble. I would rather download the packages from NVIDIA's FTP site and install them using the install script NVIDIA provides. Check ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/.
I'm currently using driver version 96.29 for my Geforce FX 5500 - couldn't get the latest one (97.46) to install. It failed to build the kernel module for reasons unknown to me, but it seems that some packages will do that with certain kernel versions (mine is 2.6.17.13-ubuntu1, compiled from sources downloaded via APT from the Ubuntu repository). I have installed Kubuntu on my machine, and installed drivers this way about a full year ago and it has yet to crash - it's rock solid even with both machine and video card slightly overclocked.
