I didnt get this option to of installing GRUB. The CD i got was live + installation both in one. I first had to boot up the live CD and when i loaded the OS fully then i had an option of installing the OS to HD.
What i am going to do is download another copy from here and do a fresh installation i guess. What do recommend?

than,
regards,
Azzath.

No, do not do that! You will get the same exact CD (the Desktop Live CD). You want the 'Alternate CD'.
This will install Ubuntu in text mode, which in my opinion is safer.
You will not get to any desktop. It's just for installing Ubuntu. It will not affect any partitions housing any other OS. just tell it where to install, and when it is almost finished, you will then get your option to put GRUB into the MBR. Click "YES"

Regards,

Hi! I told you the difference already in the above post. You do not get the priveledge of playing around with Ubuntu if you use the Alternate CD. It's just for installing (it's a text mode installation).

Just click on my link in the above post #20, then click 'Save to disk' and click 'OK' burn the iso to CD and BAM! you got it!

I need to apolagize. I said, in post #4 that the Alternate CD does NOT give you GRUB option, when in fact it does. I meant that the Desktop Live CD does not give GRUB option.
Sorry.

Are ya downloading the Alternate CD? Hope ya get what you want! Good Luck, and thanks for the link for uploading photo's!

Hi randell6564,
i did download the alternate version of ubuntu and installed it. It did install the GRUB but didnt pick my windows. and i dont know how to edit the menu.lst file. So i am going back to FC. I would really love to have ubuntu sitting but at the same time i do quite a few things in windows too. Somehow i know to get the windows up on the boot list in FC...so i am back on my old flavour ;)

Thanx for all the help..
Regards.

Well, I'm sorry to hear that it did not work, but are you sure that when you came to the part where you are asked if you want to install GRUB to the MBR that you clicked "YES"?

Also, are you using only one HD, partitioned, or are you using two HD's, each for the two OS's? If so is one of them a S-ATA Raid device by any chance?

The reason that I ask is that if Windows is housed on a S-ATA and Ubuntu on an IDE, then there is a chance that Ubuntu will not recognize the S-ATA and end up putting GRUB on your IDE! This might give you some more understanding of my meaning.

Anyway, Whatever works, have fun my friend!

randell6564,
It didnt ask me if i want to install the GRUB to MBR..during the installation it automatically did the installation. I dont know why it didnt ask?

I am not using a S-ATA Raid device. I am using two different IDE drives and the partition scheme is as shown on my first post. Anyway..i'l try more research before i start ubuntu ;)

Thanx mate.

DAMN! I hate to say this, but if it did not ask if you want to put GRUB onto MBR then you did not download the 'Alternate CD', you downloaded the Desktop live CD again!

The ' Alternate CD' WILL in fact ASK you if you want to install GRUB to your MBR my friend!
