Transferring from Debian testing
 

Hello everyone,

I am currently downloading kubuntu, my current distro being Debian Sarge (testing). I do the odd development work, but mainly use debian as my desktop with windows being a neccessary evil for the odd game.

What I want to know is, are the ubuntu backports good enough to keep my packages up to date (at a debian testing sort of level would be nice) or do I need to look at 'breezy badger' (nice naming guys :P) to keep that sort of level of new packages?

Other than that, i look forward to a stable yet nice looking version of debian. And it's bound to have better fglrx support than i did with my last setup :S

Um, not to nitpick, but Sarge is not the testing branch, it's the stable branch. If you want testing, that would be Etch.

It all depends on what you call up-to-date. Hoary is based on the unstable Debian branch and in about 4 months there will be a new release again based on Debian Sid. If you really need newer versions of programs during the 6 months release cycle just hope it's available through the backports repo or request the package being put there. You could always install stuff manually of course. The Ubuntu team will only provide you with the necessary security fixes.

Although, I haven't done an update since it was considered stable, so it's pretty much still sarge ;)
