hi all, i'm installing ubuntu 7.04 on a friends laptop. I'm having a problem getting dvd playback working... doesn't usually cause problems but this one is strange.
I open up totem and try playing a dvd but get the following message,
Quote:
The source seems encrypted, and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss?
I have libdvdcss2 installed to the latest version (1.2.9). Also have libdvdread3 (0.9.7), libdvdnav4 (0.1.10-0.1), totem-xine, medibuntu repositories installed and have even tried easyubuntu which i don't normally find i need.
Get a lot of this output string when I open a dvd from a terminal in totem.
Quote:
*** libdvdread: CHECK_VALUE failed in ifo_read.c:1631 ***
*** for pgcit->pgci_srp[i].unknown1 == 0 ***
Any ideas? I've looked every where but am at a loss.
just my here, but gxine is not the best application out there for audio. Having tried it on several machines and distros, have never really gotten it to work properly. I prefer mplayer. Gxine will skip, lose files that you know for a fact are there and all of that. Might suggest experimenting around.

I really like VLC... Xine is OK to. I don't care for Totem, Mplayer or gxine. I have Totem and Mplayer for Firefox plugins, but thats about it.
cootetom, I have no idea why you're not able to play DVD's. I've followed the instructions on that link many, many times, and never had a problem..
I am having *exactly* the same issue. Using Cassandra 3.0 (Mint). Works fine on my laptop - but the same OS on my desktop (a new Acer) I get the same messages. Question: could the problem be related to hardware in some way? Any other ideas? I don't think the player we choose is the issue.
