totem and xine aren't playing .avi files


depite the fact that i have installed all the gstreamer(s)
viz

in addition i have also installed xine-td,,xineui and xinit
even then it is not able to play .AVI FILES

THE ERROR MESSAGE SAYS
"YOU DONT HAVE THE DIVX-5 CODEC INSTALLED"


CAN ANYBODY HELP ME OUT OF WHAT SHOULD I DO

First, please don't use ALL CAPS; it looks like YOU ARE SHOUTING.

Second, AFAIK, xine doesn't use gstreamer; it has its own libraries. Download xinelib with synaptic.

As for totem, sorry, can't help; maybe someone else knows.

totem uses xine-lib so just download that and it should work.

in the synaptic i couldn't find xine-lib rather there was libxine..
will that do the job??

Hi,

You'll need the w32codecs package, available from multiverse, I think.

Also, this will only work with xine / mplayer AFAIK, so if you want to use Totem for video playback, you'll need to install totem-xine instead of totem-gstreamer.

Personally, I just use xine + xine-ui for all my video playback purposes.
