Tntrepid does not allow entering any password

I have a situation where none of the three Kubuntu installations will connect to the internet, though any live CD will. I was trying to download from offsite backup and was denied access due to insufficient permissions (which actually weren't). When I tried to chmod, the permissions became all ??s. I can get into Jaunty and Hardy but feel that Intrepid should be more reliable at this point (I have had many problems with Hardy, and Jaunty is still in alpha). Any way to repair the password? I can't enter even one letter.

Intrepid Problem

I am glad a few people are having problems at the login stage with Intrepid. I have had to go back to Hardy to clear my problems up. I tried everything suggested from several forums. From all the suggestions I have had it seems that the xserver is not cleanly working as I get two login screens - one old and one new. Pity, Intrepid shows such good promise as competition to Windows 7. Anyway stick with Hardy and see what happens after the next few updates, which are coming fast and furious at the moment.
