Thunar hangs/freezes CPU 100%

On my 12.04 install I've noticed Nautilus being very slow so I've decided to try another filebrowser. I've had other installs of various linux distro's with Thunar and I like how it works. After installing Thunar (which is notably faster) it seems that still something is not right. When I open Thunar it works like it should but after a while it gobbles up 100% of cpu (shown in top) and it hangs. It fades to black and I'm unable to click anything in the screen. All that is left is to kill it and start a new session.

Any ideas?

What is your thunar version and what type of directory you are working on when slow down occurs?

Thunar versions before 1.4.0 had some problems handling gvfs-network related browsing. If it is possible try install thunar version 1.4 or later, this is packed under Xfce4 version 4.10, and it is most advisable to install Xfce4 v.4.10 altogether so that all dependencies for thunar is readily settled. Get it from here.

Hope that helps.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for your answer :) I used the Thunar which was (and is) in the repo from Ubuntu, version 1.2.3. I have now installed the ppa for xfce 4.10 and updated to Thunar 1.4.0. I'm counting on the dependencies to be resolved by the packet-system. Unity has grown on me so installing the whole xfce is a little too much for my liking. Unfortunately, while I was typing this, i've noticed that the problem still persist. I'm now going to attemt to fix the gvfs-fix I've seen on other pages. See if that helps. I'll update here when I have more info.

Too bad, no solution yet. Setting the gvfs auto-mount to false did not solve my problem. Is there any way Thunar can generate more logging? Usually when something goes wrong it can be found in logging but so far I haven't found anything notable.

Okay noted.

Actually I have been a thunar user for years now, the simplicity and ergonomics of its features, the power of configuration (the point where konqueror fails), and the speed, are just things I cannot trade with other file managers. I have no issues with thunar anymore since the time I always run with Xfce4 DE.

The dependencies of thunar 1.4 are only few. You can download them all from here including thunar 1.4 itself and build them from source.

If you need guidance in how to build it come back with specific question.

Hope that helps.

Good luck.

I like Thunar very much too. I've never had problems before. The thing that bothers me is the fact that if I run under another user (root and non-privileged user) the problem is gone. The user in me calls for the quick solution (create new user, migrate data) to be done with it, but I'm partial to wanting to find out the real reason why this happens and then fixing it. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with either the fact that I used nautilus before (conflicting settings maybe?) or something else. Yesterday I tried to delete .gconf and .gnome2 to have them rebuild when logging in again but that did not help. I've also tried deleting some files from Thunar in the .cache directory, that did not help either. I'll keep looking and updating this thread, thanks for helping!

I've been wrecking my brain about this, but not near a solution. Could it have anything to do with AppArmor? Seeing as Thunar was not installed at first.
