Thinkpad 380z Sound Problems

Hi all. I am an extreme newbie so take it easy on my and don't blast me to bad! I installed Ubuntu about 2 days ago on my Laptop and have been trying ever since to solve 2 problems:

1. 3com 3CCFEM656B modem will not work
2. Sound will not work

First, the computer is an IBM Thinkpad 380z. I have a 3com Megahertz PCMCIA card installed for networking and dial up, a 3com AirConnect PCMCIA card for wireless networking, 4G HD, and 96M RAM, and I'm running the latest Ubuntu Release.

On problem #1, I think this is a winmodem and if I've done my homework correctly, it will not work with Linux.

On problem #2, I've read many articles and posts on how to solve this problem, but most have been over my head! I'm pretty sure the laptop has a CS4237 sound card, but I don't think it's being recognized at all.

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. I love the graphics and such on the Ubuntu release and I really want to get away from Windoze. Again I'm a newb so you'll have to talk me through any answers you give. Thanks guys!!
Greg

Crap, just rebooted, and no sound????

Anyone have any experience like this?

Here's the setup I used. (Copied from a web page)

After considerable searching I hit upon the right configuration. Add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.conf:

options snd-cs4236 isapnp=0 cport=0x538 port=0x530 sb_port=0x220 fm_port=0x388 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=0
alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236

You can test this immediately by doing:

modprobe snd-cs4236

As soon as I did the modprobe, the speakers popped and everything worked, then I robooted... and nothing. When I go back and do the modpobe now, I get FATAL: Error inserting snd_4236 (/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-server/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.ko): No such device
HELP!!!
