The next step- kenel compiling

Hi All,

Sitting around in my Cheetos-stained underwear and realizing its time for me to take the next step in linux- kernel compiling. I'm looking at wanting to understand things like how to add drivers for the kernel. Let's say I buy a new NIC or video card and Ubuntu doesn't pick it up automatically. This has pretty much stopped me dead in the water and looking for other distros that might "get it" at install. I feel weak and sophomoric when this happens. I want to stick with one distro and just be able to pop the hood make things work. I'm not afraid to do the research and dig in, but I feel many of the resources (such as "Linux Kernel in a Nutshell" by Oreilly) are a bit over my head. What I need is a good bridge to help me get to where I want to go. Think back to this point in your own Linux careers... how did you bridge the knowledge gap? I will be very appreciative for any help received. I know that there are others out there that will benefit from this too.

From my Parent's Basement,

pb

Dude, what's the problem? Just do some research and "pop the hood." You ain't gonna learn unless you get your hands dirty! Check for online resources. Use a test box. That way if you botch your system, no biggie; just try again.

uh... thanks aquaboot. But as I posted, I'm asking for some help here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Books or online HOWTOs?

Thanks,

Hey, it's scary the first time (& the second!), but I just followed this guide:

http://networking.ringofsaturn.com/U...nux-kernel.php

and went step-by-step. You can always boot to your old kernel if you mess up.

It's fun, and gives you an appreciation of just how wonderfully complex linux is.
Be warned, compiling my 2.4.21-0.13Custom kernel took hours on my Pentium III at 1GHz.
Lots of interesting messages fly past the terminal though. And my new (old now) kernel is still working!
Just get started!

Thanks Tredegar!

This looks like a good tutorial. I'll also take aquaboot's suggestion and try it on a test box. Thanks again for the encouragement and understanding.
