terible audio quality

After I installed ubuntu edgy I removed totem and rhythmbox because they couldn't play mp3's and i installed xmms, but now my audio quality is crap. I'm preety sure that removing totem and rythmbox didn't kill it because I reinstalled them, but it still sounds bad. I didn't play any audio files before I uninstalled totem and rhythm, so I don't know if the problem was they're from the start. The bad audio isn't only in MP3's, all audio files i try to play sound really bad.

any help is appreciated

Check the mixer to see if the channels are maxed out, don't set the channels more than 90% up.
