.tar.gz question

I have been wondering something and have decided to just ask. What linux OS group runs .tar.gz files? Is there a way to run these on Ubuntu 5.04. Yeah and if your wondering I do know that .deb files are what Ubuntu run. Thanks

Tar.gz files are uncompiled programs, i.e. source code. The gz extention is for a zip file.

So in order for you to use a tar.gz file you have to first unzip it.

Usually you have to mkdir to create a directory to unzip it into

Then you have to compile it

Then if you do not run into any compile errors you can try running the program.

I would also recommend that you check the md5 checksums just to verify that the code has not be tampered with.

You can use Tar files is any Linux or Unix distro.
