system freezes completely
I've had an interesting problem, my linux system actualy froze. Not hung, not desktop environment crashed, it actualy froze windows style. ctrl-alt-backspace didn't kill the xserver, I couldn't ctrl-alt-F1- F6 for other shells, no hotkeys worked, couldn't move mouse, didn't respond to anything. The only thing I didn't try was ssh from a remote box.
This has happened twice in the last month, both while I was running kde, but I run kde most of the time so I don't know if that means anything. Once it happened as I logged in and kde was restoring my session, the other time while I was trying to force umount a cd. should I be more concerned about this? is trying to figure out what happened a complete waste of time? my guess is hardware failure, since everything seemed to have been fixed with a reboot. |
Are you using the Nvidia drivers? If so, there is a fix for this problem in the latest 7167 driver (I also suggest applying the latest patch for the driver).
If you are using the previous 6629 driver, there is a patch for it as well. |
really? it wasn't when I was using open gl or anything , weird
