What about the output of "ip address" and "ip route show" and "ifconfig -a" (run as root).

I brought it up because Firefox is where a proxy server can be configured. Misconfiguration will prevent Internet access. Confusion can also occur when there is more than one network port on the same box. One of these cases is having both a dial up modem and an Ethernet port or having both Ethernet and Wireless ports. Not to say that any of these are your problem but they are as a matter of course some of the first things to check.

Ok, wvdial dials in logon and stays on. local ip, pri dns and remote ip all show in treminal. As far as the network setup eth0 is the only thing in the area below the network and ethernet setting. So what should be the case there? should there be something else there? How do I post the output from the terminal for all to see I have it saved but can`t copy and paste to forum.

You have a dial up modem so your network connection isn't eth0. try System-> Administration-> Networking. You will notice both a wired and modem connection. Select modem and then Properties to set it up. Make sure Modem is checked before closing. If you're not using your Ethernet port for anything you might want to uncheck Wired.

Glad I could help. At a distance it can take a while to fully grasp another persons problem. I should have caught that sooner. I and others will be lurking in the Ubuntu community to help you when your next problem comes up. It won't be long before you'll be able to help others as well. Enjoy!
