suitable printer

I want to buy a printer for my home use.
My computer specs:
1GB RAM, Pentium D processor
running ubuntu 9.04.
I want suggestions what printer will be compatible for my computer?
Will it be wise to buy a printer and scanner separately, than a combo printer-cum-scanner?

This website should help you decide:
http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/Op.../DatabaseIntro
It contains a lot of information about linux-compatible printes.

Also you might want to check LQ Harware Compatibility List (printer sections)

You don't say anything about what you want to print---eg: Black and White, Color, Photos, Paper size, etc.

Hands down, the best Linux support is from HP. Epson is also very good, and Canon is starting to play. Last I checked, Lexmark was a ZERO. I have seen specific Linux-supported low-end lasers from Brother and Samsung.

I personally do not like all-in-one machines, but I'm not sure I could give you rational reasons.

My choice:
B&W laser: HP
Color (mostly photos): Epson stylus photo inkjet---i.e. at least 6 colors

If you don't care about photos, then color lasers have gotten quite affordable. Without having done any research, I would still lean to HP.....

Scanners: Epson

In Kolkata, you can find many compatible affordable color laser models. Always check the particular models for Linux compatibility before purchase.

Some Epson Stylus will be more compatible than other Epson Stylus printer models.

Please give an example of an Epson Stylus that would be a problem with Linux. (I assume that "Stylus" means we are not talking about multi-functions.)

I believe that ALL recent Epson inkjets will be well-supported.

One caution about HP inkjets: Because the paper path is more complex, they are more prone to misfeeds. The one advantage of something like the Deskjet is the speed. (but I think not as fast as a color laser?)
