sudo apt-get install acroread returns "Couldn't find package acroread"

sudo apt-get install acroread returns

'Couldn't find package acroread'

Same goes for Flash Player:

'E: Couldn't find package flashplayer-mozilla'

http://ubuntuguide.org/#flash-mozilla

PC running Ubuntu v5.1

Tried enabling the universe and multiverse repositories?
enter synaptic, then configuration, repositories and add the universe and multiverse repositories for all the categories.

Did you follow the adding extra repositories instructions and then sudo apt-get update to update the cache? If so I would suggest an apt-cache search package_name just to make sure that the name of what you are installing did not change.
