If Ubuntu is similar to my Debian, then it looks like the install-info.postinst script can't find the update-info-dir command. This should be in /usr/sbin/, which should be in root's path.

Are you running the update command as root?

Is this a new installation of Ubuntu and now you are attempting to update the system? If so, probably the easiest thing is to re-install the system and take particular note of the step where it asks you to provide a password for the 'root' user.

'Root' in Linux is the same thing as Administrator in Windows. You need to be the root user to do any system administration. Be careful when doing things as root as it is quite easy to damage your system.
