Streaming Video from a Ubuntu machine

with ubuntu do i have to install some form of a streaming server service? so they can just access the link to the video and it will open up in a designated player... so they do not have to download the file...

i am guessing it has to be come open source streaming server... i am just not sure which one is good enough and will work well with ubuntu

I think video can be streamed if you just embed the video in a web page or even more simple, convert it to flash (then it will be similar to YouTube). However I might be off track here, do you mean streaming as in live video streaming like a news site or something ? If that's the case I can't help sorry.

Good luck.

To stream video to the web you need to install apache. A site you will create for the apache web server will link users to the video stored on your machine.

I just have a SAMBA/NFS share that I push out to all my boxes. I am able to listen to my MP3's and watch AVI files with no problem in my LAN.
