I insert a CD-ROM or DVD with data on the disc, but see no desktop notification that a disc was inserted. I see it only when K3B is opened, but I cannot browse the disc at all.
What gives here?
Overall, I'm very happy to be back on the KDE desktop and I have the system customized to most of my preferences.

It sounds as if automounting has been disabled. K3B shows discs whether they are mounted or not. Check the Autostart options on the Advanced tab of System Settings.
The Autostart options are only:
Desktop file (blank afterwards)
Script File: "gtk2-engines.....pre KDE Startup enabled [down arrow after the word startup]"

when I clicked on the URL posted in your reply, I get "404 Forbidden."

Don't give up yet! This is actually the best time to learn things. If you haven't rebooted and still have a working desktop, consider installing pysdm: http://pysdm.sourceforge.net/
It is a fstab editor. It doesn't remake it for you, but it is pretty easy to use. I used it when I started out.

I simply switched back to the 9.10 Gnome desktop. Although I like using KDE, it seemed more bloated, and I had to install several "helper" applications simply for a usable desktop.
This experimentation, even with other distros, explained why Ubuntu rules!
