Firefox often gets really slow, and "top" shows its CPU usage as 100%. This happens even when I'm not actively loading a new web page. Even when closing Firefox, the condition can persist for ten seconds or more.
This may be due to an addon, but with many addons installed, it's hard to troubleshoot.
Can you recommend a method for dealing with this (other than to stop using Firefox)?

There's your culprit, I'm sure and I don't think there's any getting around going through them and seeing which of them is possibly causing the problem. Please see here for additional suggestions. You also might want to consider disabling or removing ones you don't need or use.
