Stop Compiz starting automatically - Kubuntu Feisty

Hi,

I installed compiz to see what all the fuss was about. It's pretty, but I don't want it starting automatically every time I reboot. I don't know how to disable it though.

Ideally, I'd like to keep it installed so I can play with it every now and then.

Depends on how you installed it. Manually or through synaptic/aptitude/apt-get ?

Which session manager do you use?
Code:
cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager

running that I get:
/usr/bin/kdm

I installed compiz via apt-get (I upgraded from edgy to feisty)

I'm not running ubuntu so I don't know exactly how ubuntu installs compiz.

http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000081

There are two things to stop: Xgl back to X and not starting compiz

First one is easy:
Code:
grep ServerCmd /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
What does it say?

Could it be that compiz is put in the autostart?

Quote:
If you are comfortable using cgwd in GNOME or KDE, then configure your favorite desktop to start the compiz-start script automatically each time. If you are using KDE, open the System Settings, choose KDE Components, and then click the Add button in Autostart Applications to add this script.

If you are using GNOME, select System->Preferences->Sessions from the main menu. Click on the Startup Programs tab and click the Add button to add compiz-start as one of the startup scripts.
Also as a quick idea, can you search for files containing compiz
sudo updatedb
sudo locate compiz

I do have a system settings, but I don't appear to have a kde components selection?

I ran those two commands and got a list of files with a list of compiz in them.

I went into .kde/Autostart and there's nothing there, so doesn't look like that's it

Also, there doesn't appear to be any reference to compiz in xinitrc

I just removed compiz entirely. Everything's back to normal.
