stable or not

hello,
i would like to know if ubuntu is stable enough to do the following:-
Store high res dslr images on and view/edit them
Listen to music and watch movies, clips etc
the usual amount of web activity ie emails, teamspeak, gaim etc

The reason i ask is that i used to have suse 10 and it was good but limited software(compared to ubuntu) was one of the reasons i changed over. Now i have come across several posts of people who`s machine is now crashed and unrecoverable or cant get any furthur than the console after an event ?
Many thanks, steve.

It's stable, but you won't get a lot of that stuff "out of the box."
If you want to make your life a bit simpler, first try out the live CD to see how it works in general on your hardware. Then, install Ubuntu and check out Automatix.

ubuntu

hello,
i have installed ubuntu and used automatix to great advantage, but would like to know if the os is stable enough for my needs. What i dont want to do is start using ubuntu and then find to my horror that the system folds and wipes all of valuable files. (yes i do backup, but thats not the point). Any ideas ?

Well, I use it every day, and it seems to be fine...

I use Breezy with quite a bit of non-standard stuff installed, and I have not had a problem yet. I installed it on an IBM t42p laptop.

I play various media files (from music to divx), watch DVDs, play CDs, do a small amount of photo manipulation via Gimp, surf the web, check email, ssh all over the neighborhood, run desklets, gaim, gkrellm, generate PDFs and a whole bunch of other stuff.

My desktop has only crashed twice, and that's been after I've hacked about a bit and made a mistake. It's been running since August (started out on Warty).

I also run the server edition on a whitebox which has been up and running for several months. It sees fairly high traffic on it's samba shares from all sorts of clients and most of the time I'm not even aware that it exists. :)

Hope that helps.

Ben
