ssh connection timing out Ubuntu 10.04

I've recently upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04, and having upgraded I can no longer ssh (or sftp or scp) to my university network.

Before upgrading I could ssh without any problems. On ssh-ing now I get the following message:
sshuni
ssh: connect to host stargate.uclan.ac.uk port 22: Connection timed out

where sshuni is an alias for the following: ssh -Y -C jk@stargate.uclan.ac.uk

I also had problems getting firefox working when I initially upgraded, however these were resolved by disabling IPv6. I suspect this is somehow related to my current problem but I don't know where to start trying to fix this.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

try
Code:
ssh -Y -C -4 jk@stargate.uclan.ac.uk
(just to rule out ipv6, although stargate.uclan.ac.uk does not have an AAAA record)

try
Code:
ssh -Y -C -vv jk@stargate.uclan.ac.uk
and see if there are any clues

what does this give you:
Code:
telnet stargate.uclan.ac.uk 22
Does it work from other computers on your LAN?

Do you have a firewall on?

Thanks AlucardZero! adding the -4 option seems to have worked.

I'm not entirely sure what this does though, does this mean use IPv4 rather than IPv6?

Yes.
Code:
-4 Forces ssh to use IPv4 addresses only.

Hey kells,

I go to the same uni, would love to ssh into network lite, how do you do it? I cant seem to find the right place to point to. Is it uclanusername@stargate.uclan.ac.uk?

I don't actually ssh into the university network, I'm an astrophysics research student, and the astrophysics department has its own linux network that you need a separate account for.

I don't know if it's possible to ssh into the university network, but I doubt it. LIS aren't very good on linux support so I wouldn't hold your breathe!!!
