SPDIF no sound...

hello to all,

i have been having a problem with my spdif, it doesn't work. The analog sound works but my digital is muted. I tried different settings and nothing. When i go to alsamixer i realized that in the column where is IEC985 i cannot do anything. I cannot mute or unmute. The space between the volume bar and the label is empty. There is no such thing like MM or 00 nothing. I can move the bar up and down but that's all.
Any input will be appreciated,

You need to post more infor for starters. What sound card do you have? If it is an Intel HDA Audio, what is the actual codec? What version of alsa?

Most of this info is in /proc/asound. lspci will also tell you what card you have, to a point.

thanks for the response but i found a solution. For all who have problems with spdif:

install xmms, for the output plugin use ALSA then click on configure use PCM as a mixer device and for the audio device use default. Then right click on the kmix click on Select Master channel and choose PCM. Then go again to kmix but now left click and then click on Mix. Slide the bar all way down for ICE958.
