The problem is here:

##mkvtoolnix
##deb http://www.bunkus.org/ubuntu/precise/ raring (this is line 63)
##deb-src http://www.bunkus.org/ubuntu/precise/ raring

I blanked it out, now update works. What should it be???

Please post the output of:

Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
so we can see the malformed line 63 and recommend how to fix it.

sources.list is an important system file and you should not edit it directly unless you know exactly what you are doing. Ubuntu provides a GUI tool that is safer for beginner users; see here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu

I spend a lot of time on Ubuntu Forums, and "malformed line x in source list" is definitely in the top 10 errors. Whereas users who install the stable, supported, tested, trusted software from the official default Ubuntu repos seem to experience fewer errors/glitches/crashes. Just an observation.

Sorry, I see that we cross-posted.

If you trust the unsupported 3rd-party bunkus.org repos to be stable and reliable with your Ubuntu system, then follow the directions here: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkv...downloads.html

Specifically, you are trying to use "precise" (Ubuntu 12.04) software sources with your "raring" (13.04) system. Not a good idea.

Well, that's not good! I'll just leave it ### out!

I updated from 12.04, or rather, it installed itself, but kept my home directory
