Sound from only one headphone from front panel. But works perfect from other jack.

Hello all,
Desktop machine Dell OptiPlex 330n running Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS.
Code:

Distributor ID:        Ubuntu
Description:        Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:        10.04
Codename:        lucid

Code:

Linux IBDesk06 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 01:12:52 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
It is Intel mobo.

Code:

chaitanya@IBDesk06:~$ lspci -v | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

The problem is, when I connect the headphones to the from panel audio jack, only right headphone works. Left one has no sound. But if I connect same to the main jack at the back of the machine, everything works fine. Both headphones have sound.
Any help why this is happening and if anyone else has the same problem.

Wikipedia tells me that the Optiplex line of computers is about five years or more old and that they are towers, so they are relatively easy to get inside of.

I think it's probable that this is a mechanical problem. I would get out my multi-meter and test for signal in contacts for the ports in the front. With this sort of problem, I've found it wise to rule out hardware first; all the software fixes in the world won't fix a hardware problem.

I doubt the hardware problem. Windows works fine. Will still contact the Dell support and ask. Its still in warranty.

That would indeed rule out hardware. My next step would be to load of a live Linux CD of something other than Ubuntu and test the front and back ports with that.

Slax might be a good choice, since it does not use Pulse Audio, which has a reputation for being quirky.

I would be most interested to hear what happens when you call Dell and start asking questions about a dual boot Windows/Linux computer. That will probably be worth a thread all of its own.

I am not sure if Dell is going to support if I keep using Ubuntu. But I would still give it a chance. Let me see if they have guts to help someone who uses Linux. I tried them calling for server and they do not even support windows server 2003. Strange.
