Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
I hope someone can help me out here. I have a sound blaster audigy 2 ZS sound card and I can't get it to work. I am on Ubuntu 5.04 and had it working before. I had to do a reinstall onto a new HD, old one bit the dust. I have also tried installing the alsa-driver 1.0.9b and still no sound. I have disabled onboard sound as well.
My specs are:
Asus p4p800 SE Motherboard
1280 MB of RAM (I don't know what that is in GB, may a gig in a half)
Nivida GeForce FX 5500 OC 256MB DDR AGP 8x/4x video card
Creative Labs Sound blaster Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card
Intel Celron 2.8 GHz

well here I am again found the solution.
For some reason it changed itself to digital from analog, here is how to change it back.
open terminal type alsamixer
a panel will open up it looks like there are about 2 little boxes with mm in them and 5 sliders but if you keep pushing the arrow key right till you find the little boxes with mm in it for analog and I also had to swith the oss one said sigtel I believe was almost all the way over put the focus on the little boxes and hit m that will trip the switch and turn it on. hit escape to close.
When you reboot you will loose it unless you save it
sudo alsactl store
is the save command i believe...good luck

once you open alsamixer from the command line you will see a mixer panel.
there will be several slider bars and in between the slider bars some little boxes with sideways looking mm in it.
those little boxes with mm in them are switches to turn features on and off.
By using your arrow key -> you can move over to the proper switch to turn it on.
if its black with mm in it then it is presently turned off it will turn green when it is on.
you turn it on by moving cursor over till you are on it then type M
You will need to find the switch for analog/digital.
because if you are wired to analog and its set to digital you will get no sound.
Don't be fooled into thinking you are seeing all the switches keep pressing your arrow key to keep moving over till you find the analog switch.
I also had to switch for the Oss mixer too you can get an idea what it is going to be labled by going to sound control in your system tools. on the file menu there is an option to change mixers alsa or Oss and see what its calling the oss I think mine said audigy2 sigtel or something like that?
so hopefully not to confusing easiest way is to put in a cd and start it.
toggle a switch in alsamixer if you get sound that was the right one if you don't toggle it off again and move over to next switch.
mine were almost all the way over to the right just keep pressing that arrow key over till you see them.

This fixed my problem also. I actually needed to turn the analog/digital box off for this to work.

just have to thank all who have been posting in this thread over the past years...
I had no problem with the sound, for me it was the microphone which did not record anything.
the issue turned out to be that the input volume was too low. (It was on 0)
i had todo the following (in that order):
"alsamixer"
and then [f6] to choose my sound card
then [f4] to choose input
then just raise the volume on mic (up arrow).
ubuntu 10.10 here.
