Some problems with Ubuntu...

Hey,

I installed Ubuntu yesterday to give it a shot, and have so far hit the following problems:

1. The GCC Java compiler doesn't...work. When I type gccj filename.java, it says something about a lib not being available and exits...

2. I installed JRE 1.5, in the hopes of using LimeWire. I start LimeWire, and it exits, giving me an error message (It points to the directory, /usr/java/jre1.5.../bin/java, and then says "/usr/java/jre1.5.../bin/java = Error"), and when the error message occurs, LimeWire quits....

3. I installed Xine libs, and the libdvdCSS packages from one of the mirror sites, but DVD playback doesn't work. I open Totem and I hit Play with my AC/DC Live at Donington ( ) DVD in the drive, and it begins playing, but video is laggy to the point where it isn't watchable, and it also is fuzzy. I don't know if it is because I am using Totem, or if it is because of permissions on the drive...all I know is that it could work, but just not that well...

Any help would be appreciated!

Install jre 1.5 from http://java.sun.com or http://blackdown.org

after 1. set the JAVA_HOME variable and add java bin directory to your path
Filename : ~/.bash_profile

JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jre1.5
export JAVA_HOME

PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH

Hey,

Well, I installed GIJ using Synaptic and no luck, so I un-installed it (Since I am going to re-install JRE)....

I reinstalled the JRE and wrote the 4 lines out the the Bash Profile file in my home directory (JAVA_HOME, Export JAVA_HOME, etc.), but when I do echo $JAVA_HOME it doesnt work, and when I type in Java in command prompt, it doesnt recognize any file. Did I do something wrong there?

As for the DVD problem, I installed the Win32 Codecs...but still no luck. The DVD playback is horrid...but I still have no idea how to fix it

Thanks!

I just finished hooking up the alternate repositories and such...WOW!

Everything works as it should, and I am now a full convert to Ubuntu

This is the first distro I could use apt-get for every program..haha...simplifies everything
