software locations to download from for linux mint 11
 

Locations to download dpkg files from to install in linux mint 11 lxde.
I can't download them from synaptic because of the end of life support
has occurred. I will attempt to download them from any sources that
you recommend?

I am not sure what it is exactly that you want.

dpkg is a package management tool that is installed on your system as it is based on Ubuntu which, in turn, is based on Debian.

I have no idea what the EOL for LM is. Have never seen any sense in a respin of a respin (Ubuntu respins Debian, LM respins Ubuntu). How ever I can tell you that there are security problems using systems that are no longer supported.

This is why there are new versions released and current version package upgrades. I suspect that LM 12 is also past its EOL. You could check with the LM site or the forum as to the status of LM 12.

If it has not pasted its EOL you could upgrade your install to 12. If it has pasted its EOL then you need to reinstall with a newer version like LM 15.

If you are installed on 2 partitions, / (root) and /home, it is relatively safe to install while formatting / and not formatting /home. This will most probably save all your data although a back up of that data is still recommended. If you are installed on just one partition, / (root), you should save your data and do a clean install of LM 15 on 2 partitions.

I do see that there is no dedicated ISO for Lxde for LM 15. Check to see which of the offerings is the smallest image. Probably Mate or Xfce.

Install that and then install Lxde from the repo when you log into your new install. When that is finished installing simply reboot or log out (faster). At the login screen you can choose which "session" you want to boot to. Choose the Lxde session. This should make that your default session for future logins.

If you check with the forum for LM there may be a community version of LM that uses the Lxde DE (Desktop Environment) that you could use.

This is your problem. You are trying to run an unsupported version of Mint.
You need to do a clean install of the current version of Mint, and your problem will be solved.
Mint is based on Ubuntu. When a version of Ubuntu reaches end of life the repositories go offline and are gone forever. I have never used Mint, but I would think that their unsupported versions go offline also.

I will explain this. I can't run Linuxmint 12 or above because of the age of my computer which is too old. It doesn't support Linuxmint 12 or above because it breaks the software operating system, on shut down the OS goes "Broken pipe, can't write to disk" on the screen.

Yes I think you should list your hardware. I have a bit of trouble with the concept that it is too old to run supported Linux. LM or Ubuntu may be a problem.

I have a laptop here that I have not figured the age on but it is a Latitude with no wifi, has a floppy drive, a dsl connection and a built in dial up modem. It is running Debian Wheezy which Ubuntu 12.04 is based on with Xfce for the DE (desktop environment). This was picked out of a pile of discarded laptops because it would boot.

Ubuntu, and I am sure LM, has a package ubuntu-minimal that is included in all of its versions including the server editions. This includes a number of, I think, dodgy packages that cause problems on older devices.

Look at my sig at the bottom of this post to see what hardware I have listed. This is a good place to start. Those are the most important ones (I think) and the ones most likely to cause you problems.

A lot of distros have Live CD/DVDs. If you have a running Linux, which you do, these can be, usually, put directly on a usb stick if you don't have a DVDrom to burn that sized disk. This will of coarse only work if your bios will boot from a usb device.

Many distros put out netinstall ISOs. These are small and take up little room on a CD. You have to finish the installs from the tty prompt on them. Not as hard as it sounds.

While you are listing your hardware it would be good to explain what the problem is you run into with the newer versions of LM.

I am running a Dell dimension 4500S with a Pentium 4 proc,
1.8 GHz with 512Kb cache, 1 Gb of ram, a 40 Gb HDD, an on
motherboard video card and sound.
The computer is a desktop unit and it still has the MS windows
XP sticker on it from about 2001 - 2004. The dealer replaced MS Windows XP with LM 11 Lxde. I am aware of the EOL / no longer
supported status but I will continue to run this OS.

That should run versions of mint after 11. There is even a mint hardware page listing the 4500 and mint 'lisa' (mint 12)-

Why?

Running an unsupported OS is not a good idea. If you had a newer, supported version it would also be able to d/l and install software from the repos without any stuffing around.

I can install lm 12 but after I finish the install about a dozen shut downs later the OS will break writing to the screen "Broken pipe, "can not write to disk". It will continue to write to the
screen "Broken pipe, can not write to disk" on each shutdown afterwards. LM 13 and above also breaks down the same way.
As far as the End of Life, no longer supported status, I will continue running LM 11 regardless.

Yopu could try to figure out what is causing the "Broken pipe, "can not write to disk" msg, or you could try some different distros.

Using Mint 11 is a security risk. If it just impacted on you, it would be less of an issue....but unsecured computers can cause _everybody_ on the internet problems.

I have downloaded a later version of Mozilla web browser which is version 25. I am running this one with Ghostery, Better Privacy, and Download helper installed. Also I have version 24 installed as well for two more user accounts.

The browser is only one source of security isues. Just using a current browser on an unsupported OS like mint 11 does not mean that it is safe.
