Slowwwwwwww!!!
Hello again, I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 a couple of days ago. I like the interface but I'm on an old Intel P3 600Mhz box with 128mb of ram and this OS is SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! I have a direct connection to Comcast High Speed Internet through ethernet and there is no excuse for slow to me. I am using Firefox but I don't think that Firefox is the culprit because EVERYTHING is slow. Besides that, my wife is on an XP Pro machine and is just zooming right along, so it's nothing to do with Comcast as far as the browser goes, but like I said, the WHOLE system is slow. I took Windows 98SE off of here to try out Linux and even THAT wasn't as slow as this. I really want to give Linux a fair shot so any help is GREATLY appreciated, but so far this is sad.
Thanks in advance for any help, Rob G

I may be new here, but I don't think your computer has the right hardware to run ubuntu (gnome) - I thought you needed at least 256mb RAM or greater?

Thanks for the response, I was under the impression that you needed that to install it only. I may be wrong on that, wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last. Thanks. As cheap as ram is I'll just get more ram and give it another shot. If that doesn't work, well, I'll go from there. The cpu should be plenty fast enough. Thanks for the input.

This is correct. You should have at least 256Mb of memory. If your motherboard will accept more memory, this would help your problem.
One other thing, FF2 is extremely slow for me, also. I changed to Swiftfox2. It has versions tweaked for each CPU. You can install it from Automatix2.
Here is a link to a site that is the best I have found for installing software:

Good luck!

It should work rather good on 256 MB RAM. 512 MB is a optimal value let's say and really gives the kick.
But you don't have to use full gnome you can install some smaller desktop environments like fluxbox, if you *REALLY* don't want to spend money on RAM.

Try installing Xubuntu. You can do a whole reinstall or just install the XFCE packages without eraing anything by doing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

256MB or greater is recommended for GNOME. although I have a full install of Ubuntu (with GNOME) running on 64MB RAM downstairs. Not exactly fast. (I had to put in a gig of swap. )
I would think that XFCE or fluxbox would be more suited to the hardware.
