Slow ata scanning with Ubuntu Hardy on Acer Aspire 5051
Since using Ubuntu Hardy the startup of my laptop has slowed down considerably.
Looking at the output of the boot up shows at long time waiting for ata ports to be scanned, as seen in my dmesg output.

Adding all_generic_ide and/or irqpoll does not help and takes just as long and since Hardy, adding all_generic_ide is needed to be added to the install parameters.
Both the Hard drive and the DVD drive are normal IDE and not SATA
while the laptop works fine it's annoying waiting extra time for it to continue loading compared to older versions of ubuntu and any help would be grateful.
Thanks,
Mat

I've never found a solution to this but when I played around with Fedora 10 a few weeks ago the problem seemed to be solved so you could try that if you have the time to try a different distro.

Since you have ide hard drives, have you checked to see if dma is enabled:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DMA
This does not seem to be the problem that it was with earlier versions of Ubuntu, but it is worth a try.
Also, try passing hda=noprobe to the kernel line when bootng Ubuntu.
EDIT: I corrected a typo. It should be hda=noprobe.

Read what tommcd said you have a IDE drive Integrated Device Electronic. not a sata
The Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA, IPA: /ˈseɪtə/, /ˈsætə/ or /ˈsɑːtə/) computer bus has the primary function of transferring data (directly or otherwise) between the motherboard and mass storage devices (such as hard disk drives and optical drives) inside a computer.
and looking at the error log it tells you the scripts say sata do not know why and it is not till it has gone through everything that it gets the hard drive up with the right ID.
this should point you into the right direction.

You have to disable sata_sil module by adding it to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

I added sata_sil to the blacklist and it worked... after realising update-initramfs had to be done, didn't figure that one out till the kernel updated, doing this automatically.
Thanks for the advice, my bootup speed is now basically half its old time
