I Think thats how its called.Linux Single user mode wher user has all rights ...

in ubuntu, the first user that is created has super user rights through the sudo command. If you are asking how to login as root, there is a way to assign yourself a root password, and I think with that you could login at GDM with

root

password

but I'm not sure. Why do you need to ? Why not just use sudo, or if you get tired of typing it in just sudo -s to work in root.

When you boot, in the bootloader (LILO or GRUB), you can append a kernel argument "single" which will boot into single user mode. See this for more info.
