several question..

hey guys, i have several questions about kubuntu, hopefully you guys can help me.

1. how do i install all the multimedia codecs out there so that i can watch wmv, avi, mpg, etc files? i checked the ubuntuguide and did what they told me, but it still doesn't work..

2. i have a creative zen micro, which is supposed to be compatible with gnomad2. however, when i plug it in gnomad2 doesn't recognize it. how do i get it to sync?

3. my sound still isn't working... i had a long thread about it before, but it's still not fixed, so if any of you know anything....

4. i had another question, but just forgot it. i'll let you all know when i forget.

thanks
/jnev

Perhaps you could start with something like mplayer and work from there.
(mplayer covers just about everything ... a google for mplayer and the relevant codecs should reveal all)

Not enough detail for a lazy non-psychic.

I had a witty answer, but I couldn't be fscked. :)

ps. I won't remember to answer your question that I missed.

damn, meant when i remember. DOH

mplayer wouldn't really install on my system for some reason. not sure what the exact error is, i'll try again.

ok i downloaded the codec pakage from mplayer's site. i unzipped it, but when i do ./configure it says "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory" . what am i doing wrong?

The Codec package isn't a typical install-from-source package. Instead, it's contents are supposed to be copied, entirely, to a directory. On my system (Slackware) it's /usr/lib/win32. You may have a different directory for Kubuntu.

Or for the codecs, you could try following the How to install Multimedia Codecs? instructions over on the Unofficial Ubuntu Guide.

jnev 05-31-2005 05:01 PM

copying the .tar didn't work. i still can't view wmv files, and i haven't tried quicktime or avi.

i tried the ubuntuguide a while ago but it didn't work

What sort of problems did you have when trying the instructions in the Ubuntu Guide?

jnev 06-01-2005 05:12 PM

doing 'sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.8-lame' gives me this error:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gstreamer0.8-lame: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-21) but 2.3.2.ds1-20ubuntu13 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

then if i try to play a wmv (haven't tried mpg or avi yet) it doesn't work...

Manzabar 06-01-2005 08:43 PM

That particular one is for playing back MP3s. Why not skip it, try the remaining commands and seeing if your files will play?

jnev 06-02-2005 01:11 AM

i did, and they won't play. btw, the only way i can play mp3s is through real player. no other program will play them for some reason...

Uh, did you actually read this:

Quote:

?

It says that you need to apt-get install libc6 before this one will install. Try doing that.

jnev 06-04-2005 08:22 AM

it says package not found.

bengoodger 06-04-2005 08:57 AM

Well, look for it in Synaptic then (making sure you've got your repositiories configured appropriately, see the manual.)

I agree. Clearly, you're trying to use the command-line and shouldn't be (others should be, just not you). Synaptic will install stuff for you and resolve dependancies. Making sure you've got the extra repositories is mainly uncommenting a few lines in /etc/apt/sources.lst. There are specific instructions about this in the Ubuntu Guide.
