Setting up my DVD and cdrom drives

I tried to download some jpeg files that I burned onto a dvd from a windows machine, yet I can't get it to open. My cd rom did ok to load Kubuntu, however when I look at Sys. Settings - Disk & Filesystems this is what I get.

Disk ATA ( thats fine)
|
System
|
Optical disk HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B (mount point) None, /dev/hdb
|
Optical disk Plextor CD-R PX-W5224A (mount point) /media/cdrom0 auto, /dev/hda Disabled.

How do I setup the DVD mount point. Is that all I have to do to get it working.?
How do I enable the CD-R.?

Hi,

The CD-R drive seems to be enabled, but the DVDRAM isn't (the former has a mount point, the latter does not).

Can you please post the output of the following console command:
Code:
cat /etc/fstab
Thanks

And I'm assuming this is on Libranet?

As a quick test, go to terminal/console and enter the following commands:
Code:
$ sudo mkdir /mnt/dvdram
$ sudo mount /dev/hdb /mnt/dvdram
$ ls /mnt/dvdram
That should show what is on the CD

Cheers,

-jk (Please post your fstab contents, because then we can help you to edit it manually to set your drive to load automatically)

Setting up my DVD and cdrom drives

Here is the contents of cat /etc/fstab:

peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 / ext3 nouser,defaults,errors=remount-ro,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 1
/dev/sda5 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrom0 auto user,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0
peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$

This is what I get when I follow your second question.

peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$ sudo mkdir /mnt/dvdram
peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$ sudo mount /dev/hdb /mnt/dvdram
mount: No medium found
peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$ ls /mnt/dvdram
peterhin@GnuLinux02:~$

I am sorry I should have indicated earlier I have just installed Kubuntu 6.0.6

Hmm... I'd offer the modified fstab, but the fact that you could not mount /dev/hdb is slightly worrying.

Could you please post the output of 'dmesg'? Thanks.

Type "sudo kwrite /etc/fstab", remove everything, and put the following in its place:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 / ext3 nouser,defaults,errors=remount-ro,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 1
/dev/sda5 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrom0 auto user,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0
/dev/hdb /media/dvdram auto user,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 0
See if that works

Talk to you tomorrow,

-jk

I haven't looked through all that, but, if you've added the line...

Does it work?

Setting up my DVD and cdrom drives

OK this is the message I got once I tried to open it;

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
[mntent]: warning no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab
mount: mount point/media/dvdram does not exist

Ok, go into terminal and type this (as root):
Code:
# mkdir /media/dvdram/
Or on a sudo system:
Code:
$ sudo mkdir /media/dvdram/
Ignore the # and $ by the way - they just represent the type of prompt.

Now, restart, and let me know what happens

Cheers

OK this is what I have now;

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdb,
missing codepage or other error
In some case useful info is found in syslog-try dmesg | tail
