running freshly installed kubuntu (newest) with loads of probs, this is one: we have a router, which means I have to set a gateway in my network settings. when I enter root pw in system settings, all that happens is, I get a "detecting hardware" box, after which it goes back to non-admin mode. so I can't do anything because the kde control center is buggy or do I get that wrong?
however, I can imagine there's a way to set the gateway manually, so how would that be?
From a terminal issue "route add default gw <your gateway>" and then restart your network. Don't have a clue how those Ubunter boys set it up, but in Slackware you'd issue "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart" as root.
however, in the system settings -> network settings I can't change anything because when I enter the root password, it says "detecting hardware" and goes back to non-admin mode.
so I tried to trick past that by entering kdesu kcontrol in a terminal and entering it there. whatever I enter, net time I check it's gone.
I even tried the route add default gw command, but again, nothing there.
ok, after manually adding gw, internet appears to be "working" but only until I reboot.
I read something about setting it up in /etc/sysconfig/network but I don't even have that sysconfig directory.
