Server: Auto login
I am trying to get my ubuntu server (7.10) box to automatically login. I have read alot of different threads which do it on other distributions but none seem to work with ubuntu. I need it to login as a certain users so my custom login-shell will run with the right privileges.
Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean exactly by "automatically log in"?
Are you trying to automatically log in with ssh (ie, ssh with no password prompt)? or are you trying to boot to an ubuntu desktop without being asked for a username/password?

auto login at the console. So it runs all of the boot scripts and then instead of asking for a username and password it goes straight into the command prompt. The sever don't have an ssh connection everything is done at the console.

This is a very bad idea, and Linux (and unix) aren't designed to let you do this without messing around in some easy to break areas.
It would be much better to leave a sticky note with a password on it stuck to the monitor.
There are some threads on this board discussing technical reasons why this is bad.

Man, you are talking this just because you want to protect the Linux Sistem, but if the proposal is to be free, i could do everything that i want, if it is not possible to do, is not free, it is like Windows, you just can do what someone let you do.
If it is not safe, i decide, not the sr. Linus. So i think that should have a solution for this, and we can found, but say that it is not a good idea, is ridiculous. I decide if it is a good idea or not.
Sorry, something

Thanks for all your help
I have found an alternative solution to my problem. I am booting into ubuntu's recovery mode which automatically logs in as root. Security for this server is not an issue as it does not have a critical application and is physical secured.

The system is free, you are welcome to learn the system and recode it to do whatever you want. That is not possible with Windows because you don't have the source to recode. I also did not say it was impossible, I just said it was not a good idea. As I mentioned, this is a fairly common question with quite a lot of threads you can look at if you want more information.
