Question Screen saver (powered down monitor) immediately after initial drum roll

Not sure if my subject line describes it well enough. To expand the issue a little:

I boot 7:10 no problems and get the initial short drum roll alerting me that it is time to enter my username. Within a second or less my monitor goes black and two little boxes stating "Digital" and "Analog" flash alternately a couple of times then the screen is completely dark and the power button flashes indicating that the monitor is in sleep/power saver mode. These features are built into the monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 932B). I notice them when the Windoze screen saver puts the PC in standby and kills the signal to the monitor (which then goes to sleep).

When I bump the mouse or press a key the screen and login dialog immediately reappear. Just as if I am waking the PC from a dark screen screen saver.

If you have made it through the above dissertation, here is my question:

Can I change the delay from the drum roll to screen saver initiation? If it is actually screen saver initiation. Not a real problem, just very strange.

Well - unintended consequences etc... I have been playing around trying to remove UUIDs from my system - they seem to be the cause of problems with my cold iron backup and restore process. Even though I was unsuccessful in removing the UUIDs (had to restore /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst) the system no longer winks out after the drum roll. Go figure.

From what I have read and experienced myself, it is a known problem in 7.10. What I did to fix the problem is:

In a terminal type:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Scroll down to the boot list and delete the quiet and splash. If you want to you can change quiet to noquiet and splash to nosplash. It makes more since to me to just delete them.

Save and the next reboot it should be fixed.
