I've got the same problem as a previous poster (but thread closed) in that whatever I do I can't get the screen resolution to shift from 640x480. It's ruining my experience on this distro which otherwise I think is quite good.
My card is Cirrus Logic 6446 which I know can handle 1024x768 as I swap hard drives with Windows (very occasionally...!!)
Look into the configuration of X, its plastered all over the net all you have to do is google it!, the file you are looking to change btw is /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I've tried reconfiguring X, putting 1024x768 as the only config allowed, but it still doesn't change. The 'System/Preferences' pull-down only comes up with 640x480, no other. I'm at my wits end! The previous closed post in the Ubuntu Forum by RagingFuryBlack covers similar ground.
I've transferred this query from a different part of the forum, as the reples had dried up. You can see the previous suggestions on thread 325618, and my responses to them. All help gratefully received.
Make sure you put the correct horizontal and vertical refresh rates from your monitors manual, and you should have the option to your desired resolution.
do you have your exact hardware details?, because if not you can get weird screen resolutions, i remember when i installed freebsd 4 and entered something wrong, kde was massive and grainy.

I had the exact same issue, and this HorizSync and VertRefresh thing is the solution.
Thanks. Unfortunately my monitor is a work cast-off and there's no manual. I can't find anything much on the internet to give me the refresh rates. All I can glean from the badge is that it's a TUV model name 29J56G and it says it's 50/60Hz 1.5a if that's any help.
Can anyone shed any light as to what its horizontal and vertical refresh rates might be?
