Ubuntu comes with the root acount disabled by default. Due to security reasons, they
encourage you to use 'sudo' instead of logging in as root.

To enable root:
logged in as the user you setup during install type:

sudo passwd root

Enter your user password.
You will then be prompted to setup a new root password and then the root account will
be enabled as normal.

As far as the video in X, well.... maybe run xorgconfig once you are root, or then install
your nvidia drivers...

good luck

If you use the install disk to boot to the repair console you'll be root...
