running apps no longer drop to panel


when i used to run Gmail notifyer and firestarter firewall they used to drop to the panel when i closed them in Gnome.
they know longer do.. i have obviosuly uninstalled something but unsure what it is - new to Gnome.
The applications themselves have set 'minimize to tray' to close - etc.. thanks!

Did you somehow remove the system tray?

Right-click on the panel, select Add to Panel, and then add Notification Area or System Tray (I forget exactly what it's called).
