Question RP-PPPOE-3.7 Problems with Setup

I copied the tar file 3.7 onto my home folder and followed the instruction set provided at the ubuntu site. Specifically:

sudo tar zxvf rp-pppoe-3.5.tar.gz -C /opt/
sudo chown -R root:root /opt/rp-pppoe-3.5/

then,

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/RP-PPPoE.desktop

after executing, I got the following message:

(gedit:4834) Gdk-WARNING **: local not supported by Xlib

(gedit:4834) Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers

I then attempted to follow directions in the README file of the 3.7 file

After launching the ./configure command, I get the following result:

checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

Can anyone help step me through this process? Where is an acceptable C compiler reside? How do I properly set the path variables (include syntax please...)

I am working on the 5.1 release of Edubuntu which claims to work on most laptops and desktops. Since my internet access is PPPoE, I have not choice but to learn how to make this work. FC4 did not give me this problem...

Please help.

Thanks,
justresolute

Why not install this program with apt if at all possible.

Thanks for the reply. Here is what I did:

# su

Then,

# apt-get install build-essential

Then cd to the location of rp-pppoe-3.7.tar.gz and executed,

# tar zxvf rp-pppoe-3.7.tar.gz -C /opt/
# cd /opt/rp-pppoe-3.7
# ./go

I completed the questions, entered the values (DSL username and password, left gateway and server information blank)

# pppoe-start

I was up and running...

My problem was resolved by changing to root then running the apt-get install build essential command. Breezy Badger default install does not run this procedure, this is what was giving me such a headache. It's also best for users not to gedit the *.desktop file recommended on Ubuntu but instead run the pppoe-start command via the terminal as 'su'.

Thanks for the feedback - i was just resolute on finding the solution to my problems myself. Until next time! Thanks again. :-)
