root password in ubuntu???

how to get the root password for ubuntu 5.04??/
We tried using the install cd and giving 'linux single' but nothing worked out.....

i tried going to the recovery mode(menu entry was there for this mode) and set the new password.
there it showed that the root (administrator)user can't login to the recovery mode (GUI) of
ubuntu.Ok that was fine

But when we went to the normal mode also it showed the message that administrator is not allowed to login to this screen....
Why is it so???

You can set a new password for root using 'sudo'
Code:
$ sudo su
<prompted for your login password>
# passwd
<set your password after executing this command>

let me ask one question:

where should we type sudo.......??
we want to log in as the root user thro' the Gui.at present we are only able to use the root previlege in text mode or in the terminal of the other user account...
we didn't get the required solution for this problem just by reading the page whose link was given by aysiu
thanks in advance...

Do you see the Run.. command in the Gnome menu?
Select that (I believe you can also access it by typing Alt-F2) and type in
Code:
gksudo nautilus
This will allow you to browse around with root privileges instead of doing sudo this and sudo that in the terminal for every command you want.

in a terminal write

sudo passwd root
press enter

enter your password
press enter

enter a root password
press enter
reenter the root password
press enter

this will set a root password which can be different from your pass word

if u then require root log on
open login screen setup in the admin section
security tab and tick
allow root to login with GDM

you now have a root account ...
