root file system full

Using Ubuntu Edgy my root file system is 3 gigs and I somehow have used all available space on this partition. df -h show 3 gig size and 100% usage. How can I resize my home partition with out losing any data to make room for the root system?

You could boot using the GParted LiveCD to resize your partitions.

When resizing, make sure that you make plenty of room for /. I always keep about 15GB for the root partition, to make sure I won't fill it up to fast.

GParted is an excellent tool as a live CD, I have used it several times with no problems.
