Resizing the hard disk with Gparted

Hello all;

I have a 250 GB SATA hard drive, and Ubuntu installed in the firt half of it. I am considering to resize partitions to use the full disk, and I am thinking of using Gparted.
If I use Gparted, would I lose Ubuntu performance somehow? Is is a safe operation? It is possible to resize partitios without formatting them?

Thank you very much for your help,

Regards,

Alberto

Resizing and formatting are completely different operations. You can safely resize a partition (at least, for most filesystems) without losing anything or hindering operation.

No reason that you should; I wouldn't expect it to..

Always back up sensitive data because there is always the possibility of something going wrong. In all the years I've used parted, I've never had a problem with resizing partitions doing anything to my data.

For greater safety, use a live cd (like gparted or partition magic) for the purpose. Some file systems cannot be resized.

You won't be able to resize from your currently installed Ubuntu partition since that needs to be unmounted for the operation to take place. Use the Live CD and you should be able to resize without any problems. If your other partition (I'm assuming Windows) is NTFS then make sure that you've turned off encryption / haven't used the Hibernate option in Windows.
