Rendering method: None? xgl in backtrack 4 (built off kubuntu 8.10) not working.

hey all. i am running backtrack 4 (using kde 3.5.10) on my laptop with an ATI mobility radeon HD 4650 graphics card. i installed the proprietary drivers from the ati site, just as i always do in any linux installation. then i installed xgl, and all of the compiz packages, including compiz-kde, but for some reason, my system won't enable xgl rendering. every time i run either "compiz --replace" or "fusion-icon" in the terminal, i lose the borders of my windows, and every thing i've tried so far does not work. can someone please help me?

On recent versions of fglrx, Xgl isn't needed. In fact, I'm pretty sure Xgl wasn't even available in Kubuntu 8.10. Please show us the full output of the 'compiz --replace &' command.

OK, so the problem isn't that Xgl isn't found. The problem is that compiz is segfaulting. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can be any help here. After all, we are talking about a distribution that is two years old. If you really wanted to debug this, you could try installing the debug versions of compiz, running the binary via gdb and getting a backtrace. However, most bug reports would probably be closed with the suggestion of upgrading to a recent version of compiz.

You could try. I doubt that there are still 3rd party repositories for Ubuntu 8.10, though. If there are, I'm certainly not aware of them.

well, i found this: https://launchpad.net/~kde3-maintainers/+archive/ppa

for kde3, and intsalled the kde3 compiz packages from there. now i have window borders, but im not sure if it is running correctly. here is my new results for compiz --replace.

Code:
compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
/opt/kde3/bin/compiz: line 269: laptop-detect: command not found
Detected PCI ID for VGA:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1366x768) to maximum 3D texture size (8192): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: not present.
Checking for FBConfig: present.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
/usr/bin/compiz.real (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format
does that look right? i think i still need a renderer, at least that's what compiz-check says:
Code:
Gathering information about your system...

 Distribution: Ubuntu 8.10
 Desktop environment: KDE
Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc M96 [Mobility Radeon HD 4650]
 Driver in use: fglrx
 Rendering method: None

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]

 Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia)

compiz-check is old and out-dated. It should be ignored.

The output from compiz is 100% correct and indicates that compiz is running.
