Remote desktop on ubuntu

back when I ran redhat and fedora core, remote desktop was easy, just run whatever command I want for a graphical program in secure shell, and it opens up. What do I need to do on my ubuntu box to make my xserver listen on the correct ports? am I going about this right at all?

also, is there a good way to get a full remote desktop, similar to what windows does, running the entire remote desktop environment?

I'm actualy running kde and what I really want to be able to do is be able to run individual apps remotely from my debian server. I've heard that you should somehow tunnel the ports through ssh and that will work, but I've tried ssh -X user@host and just get cannot connect to server errors when I try to start an xterm. do I need to make my X11 server listen for connections?
